Markteknik i Åre Business: Mines and transport
Contact and fuel efficiency coach: Lars Wissing
Target group:
11 cars, 2 HGVs, 10 excavators, 5 tractors and 2 dumpers
Communication:
Regular communication with drivers.
Incentive measures:
Started with a pot of SEK 24,000. Every month fuel consumption for the company fell below consumption for the same month in the previous year, SEK 2,000 was added to the pot. If consumption was greater, SEK 2,000 was removed from the pot. After a 12 month monitoring period, the personnel elected to spend the bonus on a sea fishing trip in Norway in spring 2004.
Results 2003-2004: Change and results over six months:
• Fuel consumption %: Machinery fuel consumption dropped by 26.4% and cars by 21.3%. Different conditions meant the HGV figures were not truly comparable and were therefore not included.
• Monetary: Savings of SEK 205,708 over the six months
SCA Obbola Packaging
Business: Liner production
Contact: Martin Wahlberg, Marcus Fröling
Fuel efficiency coach: Anders Granér graner@naturomiljo.se
Target group: An SVE truck stacker and 13 truck drivers were trained for the project.
Fuel monitoring:
Consumption was checked by flow monitoring on the SVE truck 28/21 and fuel filling from the diesel tank was reported monthly.
Communication:
Consumption figures were compiled and reported each month to the drivers and at quarterly driver meetings.
Incentive:
An employee dinner including summer temps. Field trip to see truck production (SVE truck Ljungby) and if possible a visit to SCA Packaging Värnamo.
Results:
In addition to reduced fuel consumption on work cycles, switching off machinery when idle has also reduced machinery consumption.
Change and results over one year:
• Fuel consumption %: - 9.7% in total consumption and – 12.4% based on fuel consumption/amount of timber transported, as production rose by 4%.
• Monetary: On an annual basis, savings of around SEK 50,000 in fuel costs achieved. At the same time, machinery running time was 18% lower in the first year. Less machinery running time also means lower maintenance costs. How much is difficult to say after only one year, but would probably be in the region of SEK 50,000-100,000. In the long term, total income would be around SEK 150,000–250,000.
• Better working environment for drivers with more even driving, less stress and reduced noise level in trucks (5 –10% lower).

Results:
Change and results over one year:
• Fuel consumption % Consumption pre project start, 2002, was 62,300 l diesel (excl concrete mixers). In the first year of project (2003) fuel consumption fell to 56,800 l. Rebased in litres per kilometre fuel consumption went down 7.3% in the first year. During the second year, 2004-01-01 – 2004-08-31, fuel consumption fell a further 3.6% compared with 2003. If you compare these 8 months in 2004 with 2002, fuel consumption went down 10.5% in total. The actual target was a 5% drop.
• Monetary: Savings of SEK 35,000 in first year of project compared with reference year of 2002 (total fuel costs SEK 359,000). In the 8 months of 2004 savings were SEK 22,000 compared with the reference year of 2002. Rising fuel costs were the reason why the savings were not greater in 2004.
• Carbon dioxide emissions 10.5% lower fuel consumption corresponds to a consumption drop of 6,500 l compared with 2002, which equates to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 16 tons of CO2. A 10.5% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions means 0.027 kg CO2/km (compared with 0.032 kg/km in 2002).

Incentive: In a smaller departmental project in 2006 the 12 drivers shared a bonus for the around 9% fuel saving achieved.
Time period:
A pilot project for 12 drivers in one department in 2006. 87 vehicles have been fitted with onboard computers in 2007.
Results:
• Fuel consumption: reduction of 4%.
• Reduced carbon dioxide emissions: Under 2006 carbon dioxide emissions reduced by 48.2 tons thanks to lower fuel consumption by the 12 drivers and vehicles included in the pilot project. A further 10 vehicles were added to the company fleet in spring 2007 which meant total amount of carbon dioxide emissions rose in comparison with the previous year. However carbon dioxide emissions per vehicle in the entire fleet (kg/vehicle) fell. In addition to reduced fuel consumption, this was also partly due the company having invested in new Euro 4 and Euro 5 class vehicles.
• Monetary: Based on a diesel cost per litre of SEK 6.67 + VAT, Wiklunds made savings of around SEK 150,000 in 2006 on the vehicles in the pilot project. By spring 2007 the haulage company had saved around SEK 270,000 in reduced fuel consumption.
Other information
No figure has been calculated for reduced wear and tear to the vehicles. However Wiklunds is convinced that there have been cost savings for the company there too.
